Farmer's Knowledge and Implementation of Technical Recommendations of National Campaign of Maize Crop in Some Delta Governorates in Egypt

Abstract: This study aimed to determine knowledge level of maize growers and their implementation of technical recommendations, identify the relationship between their level of knowledge of that recommendation and some independent variables, determine the major variables affecting their level of knowledge, and study the obstacles which face respondents in maize crop production and marketing.
The study were executed in El-Behiera, Dakahlia and Kafer EI-Shiek Govern¬orates. Data were collected by personal interview using a pre-tested questionnaire from a random sample consisted of 300 maize growers. Frequencies, percentages, simple correlation coefficient, and regression analysis were used to present and analyze data statistically.
The results revealed that :
•Knowledge level of 66.3% and 28.3% of the respondents of technical recommen¬dations of maize crop is low and moderate respectively. Respondints knowledge and implementation percentages regarding potasium fertilization, basins, plant¬ing. ridging or throwing rate, phosphate and nitrogen fertilizer application, and pest control were less than 53% of them.
•There is a significant postive relationship at 0.01 level between the knowledge level of respondents and each of the following variables: degree of exposure to mass media, degree of exposure to maize extension services, size of maize cultivated area, level of education, frequency degree on agricultural center services. There is no significant relationship between respondent's participation in aggiegate extension fields and their level of knowledge, In light of these findings, the campaign must stress the importance of learning participants to improve their knowledge level so as to be reliable source of knowledge for others.
•From multiple regression analysis, two independent variables affected signific¬antly (at 0.01 level) the knowledge degree of respondent (16.3%) which are: degree of exposure to mass media, and size of maize cultivated area.
•Major constraints facing maize cultivation and marketing from respondents point of view were mentioned with percentage ranged from (9.7% - 39.7%) they are: high prices of chemical fertilizers: seat and agricultural pesticides. lack of irrig¬ation water, lack of chemical fertilizers in agricultural cooperatives and village banks. sexy exploitation. and lack of recommended pesticides
