The Role of official Extension Leaders in Managing Bird Flue Crisis on some Governorates in Egypt

Abstract: The main objectives of this research are: to determine the performance degree of official extension leaders role in carrying out activities related to bird flue disease before crisis occurring, during crisis occurring and timely; to determine official extension leaders exposure degree to information sources related to bird flue disease; to determine official extension leaders utilizing degree of methods and extension aids to face bird flue disease; to identify the relationship between the performance degree of official extension leaders in ccarrying out the activities related to bird flue disease bfore crisis occurring during crisis occuning and timely before duringtimely to overcome the disease and their studied independent variables; and also recognize the problems concerning that face official extension leaders and their suggestions to overcome bird flue disease.
The research was conducted in four governorates according to presence of disease they are: El minia, Assiout in Upper Egypt and El kalyoubia, Sharkia in Delta.
The total number of official extension leaders were 90 leaders they were distributed on governorates as follows: 20 in El minia, 24 in Assiout, 16 in Kalyoubia, 30 in Sharkia. Questionnaires through personnel interview were used to collect data that was in May, June 2007.
To analyze data: frequencies, percentages arithmetic mean, standard deviation, weighted mean and simple correlation.
The most important results were:
• The information sources related to bird flue could be arranged descending according to the importance as follow: Extension magazine, Extension pamphlets, Seminars and Conferences and T.V. programmes.
• The most important extension methods and aids used by respondent leaders to transfer bird flue knowledge to audiences were: Extension Meetings, Extension posters Loudspeakrs on cars.
• About 2 fifth of respondent leaders (35.56%) had moderate degree related to their role on performing activities related on managing bird flue crisis before the problem had took place.
•About a half of respondent leaders (44.21%) had high degree related to their role on performing activities related on managing bird flu crisis during the problem taking place.
• About a half of respondent leaders (47.59%) had high degree to their role on performing activities related on managing bird flu crisis timely.
• There is significant positive relationship on the level 0.05 between the performance degree of respondent leaders activities concerning crisis management of flu bird ( as independent variable), and number of educational years.
• The problems that were mentioned by respondent leaders to overcome bird flu crisis were:
• Decreasing of modern slaughter (97.1%).
• Chicken raising in home is still taking place without vaccination or vet. control (90%).
• Chicken consumers prefer fresh meat chicken than frozen meat chicken (88.9%).
• People sale, buy and slaught chicken by themselves (87.8%).
• Workers on poultry farmers neglect healthy conditions (86.7%).
•The most important suggestions mentioned by respondent leaders to overcome bird flu crisis were as follow:
Preparing extension seminars and meetings in order to monitoring people on bird flu disease (75.56%).
Arranging training programmes for agricultural extension on agents bird flu disease (61.11%).
Implementing intensive training programmes for workers on poultry indusry and housewives in homes by women leaders concerning bird flu (56.06%).
Establishing slaughters and huge freezers to keep slaughtered chicken ( 51.11%).
