Recycling of agricultural wastes for producing the impact root media cubes.

Abstract: This research work aims to use farming wastes or any organic resources of manures for making suitable seedling blocks (root media). This technology may help in reducing air pollution by avoiding field burning; reduce mineral fertilizers consumption, and helps in producing safe food to safe human health. The following aspects were investigated:
- Monitoring a local root media of farming wastes composting (rice straw, maize and cotton stalk) combined with welting agents (polymers), enriched with some organic and mineral materials (poultry and animal manures) to be suitable for producing a local growing media.
- Determine the effect of some engineering parameters such as, cube-forming pressure, time under pressure (dwell time) and forming temperature on the cubes durability and density. The quality characteristics of media cubs (germination tests) were also examined.
The obtained results showed that when using heated die from 40 to 70 C
The relation between media cubes density and durability rating was an exponential form. On the other hand, the relation takes a logarithmic form when processing was conducted without heating.
Additional heating above 55 C did not appear to increase the durability rate, although it did increase the dry matter density somewhat, at any processing conditions. The best durability results (92 %) were obtained from cubes formed by 350 kPa forming pressure and 55 C forming temperature at 45 sec dwell time.
No significant differences were detected between different treatments on the germination ratios of tomato seeds. The highest germination ratio (96.630%) was obtained at forming pressures of 350 kPa, and 55 C forming temperatures at 45 sec dwell time.
