Abstract: The main objective of this study was to develop, construct and test a small grading machine, suitable for small Egyptian growers (rearers) of mulberry silkworm.
To evaluate the performance of the modified handling machine, a series of experiments were carried out to study some parameters, such as the effect of riddles speeds 25, 40, 55, and 70 rpm. (0.523, 0.837, 1.151 and 1.465 m/s), riddles slope angles 0, 5, 7, and 11 degree (0, 0.087, 0.122, and 0.192 rad.) and two different moisture content of cocoons before and after drying (62.5 and 37.5+ 0.5% w.b.) on the machine grading efficiency (%) and machine grading capacity (kg/h). The quality characteristics of silk filament in terms of the silk filaments length, cocoons reel-ability and filament size (Denier) were also considered. The obtained results indicated that the best ever result was obtained at 55 rpm revolving speed of riddles and 7 degree of riddles slope angle during grading wet (fresh) and dry cocoons. At these levels, a maximum grading efficiency of (94.34 and 94.5%) and machine grading capacity (62.5 and 80.6 kg/h) were obtained for dry and wet (fresh) cocoons, respectively. Moreover, improving the economic return of the grower of mulberry silkworm, by decreasing the total reeling losses of cocoons with about 4.5 times than that using ungraded cocoons, and with about 3.5 times using cocoons graded manually, which consequently increases the economic return yearly.
