SURFACE AND SUBSURFACE DRIP IRRIGATION EFFECTS ON SOIL AND TOMATO YIELD.

Abstract: A Field experiment was carried out in order to evaluate subsurface and surface drip irrigation in sandy loam soil with high water table (80 cm from soil surface) and to study moisture distribution before and after two successive irrigations in the middle of the season, salt distribution through the soil profile before first and last irrigation, production yield, and water use efficiency in plot area of 300 m.2 (10 m. width * 30 m. length for each system). A Field experiment was carried out in Moubark Center for Green Houses under open field condition. The Nile water was used as irrigation source having EC 0.6 mmhos/cm. The soil samples were taken up to 45-cm. depth in along the emitters' line and vertical to the emitters’ line (perpendicular). The diameter of the emitters' line was16 mm. with 4 L / h emitter in line with one meter distance between laterals. The results indicated that:
1-The average soil moisture content around the lateral line after 2 h. from irrigation increased by ratio 0.13 and 0.09 from field capacity and decreased before 2 h. from irrigation by ratios of 0.45 and 0.42 from the field capacity in subsurface and surface drip irrigation respectively.
2-The salt distribution in the soil profile in the sub surface drip irrigation was better than that of the surface drip irrigation in the sandy loam soil since it decreased the salt harmful effect in the root zone and the evaporation from the soil surface.
3-Production yield increased in the sub-surface drip irrigation by a ratio 14.24 % than that of the surface drip irrigation system since it gave 7.62 and 6.67 kg/ m.2 respectively.
4-Water use efficiency increased in the sub-surface drip irrigation by a ratio 14.44 % than that of the surface drip irrigation system since it gave 17.35 and 15.16 kg/ m.3 respectively.
