THE effect of the off-time period OF in surg errigation on the on the application efficiency and water distribution uniformity

Abstract: The current study was carried out during season 1999 in clayey soil aiming to improve surface irrigation methods, using surge flow irrigation with different off-time periods compared with the continuous flow through perforated pipes. The four treatments of surge flow were (10-10 min), (10-20 min), (10-30 min) and (10-40 min) (on time, off-time) compared with the continuous flow. The results showed that the cumulative infiltration rates for 10,20,30 and 40 min off-time were reduced by 40.74%, 47.26%, 49.75%, and 50.74 % compared with that of the continuous flow. Also, the cumulative infiltration rates for 20,30,and 40-min off- time were reduced by 10.92%, 15.1%, and 16.8% compared with that of the 10-min off- time. The water losses by deep percolation were 10.5 cm for the continuous flow while it was 5.5, 3.28, 2 .64 and 2.3 cm for surge irrigation for off-time 10,20,30 and 40 min. respectively. The surge flow with 10,20,30.and 40-min off- time reduced the total advance time by 24.9%, 36%, 39.29, and 41% respectively compared with that of the continuous flow. Also, the total advance time for 20,30,and 40-min. off- time was reduced by 14.84%, 19.14%, and 21.48 % compared with that of the 10-min. off- time. The water distribution uniformity was determined for the continuous flow and the surge flow for surge irrigation off time 10,20,30 and 40 min. The values of distribution uniformity were 55%, 70%, 77.69 %, 79% and 79.9% respectively. The values of the application efficiency were 47.5%, 63.3, %, 74.3 %, 77%, and 80.5 % for the same treatments respectively. This means that by increasing the off-time period from 10min. to 40 min., the irrigation efficiency increased too. So it is better to use off time period of 40 min,. to increase the pervious parameters.
