Experimental Study On Trypanosoma Evansi Infection In Egyptian Rams With Special Reference To Semen Evaluation And Pathological Examination.

Abstract: SUMMARY:
Nine sexually mature Egyptian rams about 2-3 years old (six infected and three uninfect¬ed control) were used in this study. Rams were subjected to parasitological examination and semen evaluation three weeks before their infection with the prepared dose (2X10 T.evansi /ram). Two out of the six infected rams were sacrificed every four weeks (P.I.), where clini¬cal, hematological, semen evaluation and pathological studies were carried out. Results showed that all the infected rams were positive for the parasite throughout the experiment. The prepatent period was three days. Anemia was a distinct feature of the disease and the mean rectal temperatures were significantly elevated (P < 0.05) in addition, the mean values of hematological parameters of the infected rams dropped significantly (P < 0.05) in comparison. to the control group. The observed clinical signs were pale mucous membranes, loss of appetite, loss of weight and loss of wool together with fluctuating pyrexia which coincid¬ed with parasitemia. After the 4m week (P.I), the infected rams were unfit for breeding be¬cause of very poor semen characteristics which progressively deteriorated until the end of the investigat.on (12 weeks). Mean values of testosterone levels of the infected rams de¬creased,-progressively in comparison to those before infection period. The predominant microscopically testicular lesions noticed in infected rams were diffuse oedema and multifoccal areas of degenerated tubules. As the experiment progresses, marked testicular degeneration, fibrous connective tissue proliferation and mononuclear cell infiltration were seen which be¬came more intensive by the end of the experiment? Moreover, the epididymis revealed mod¬erate mononuclear cell infiltrations and fibrous connective tissue proliferation in the intertubular stroma and ductular lumena were completely devoid of spermatozoa. The uninfected control rams appeared normal and remained healthy throughout the trial.
