Some Biochemical Hormonal, Haematological and Histopathological Changes Following Multiple Dose Therapy of Closantel in Female Rabbit

Abstract: SUMMARY:
The effects of multiple closantel administration on some hematological, serum biochem¬ical, reproductive hormones and itfs histopathological findings were studies on 2 groups of 10 female mature rabbits each. The first group was used as control and the second group was subcutanously injected daily with closantel on a dose of 10 mg/kg body weight for 15th days. The treatment resulted in significant (p<0.05) decrease in red blood cells corpuscles, white blood cells corpuscles, hemoglobin concentrations and packed cell volume. Also clo¬santel significantly (p<0.05) decreased total protein, albumin, a and P globulin concentra¬tions while it significantly increased y globulin concentration (p<0.05). Concerning repro¬ductive hormones, closantel significantly decreased serum progesterone and estrogen concentrations compared with the control group (p<0.05). Histopathological studies re¬vealed degenerative changes in liver and kidney tissues, spleen and lung tissues were con¬gested with hemorrhagic areas and the ovarian tissues showed decreases in the number of follicles (activated, growing and antral follicles) in closantel treated group compared with the control group. Collectively, these studies indicate that multiple doses of closantel have cytotoxic effects on parenchymatus organs and detrimental effects upon reproduction. So it is advisable to avoid exposure of female animals to multiple doses of this anthelmintic drug.
