Effect of L-Carnitine As a Food Additive on Semen Pictures of Bakki Rams

Abstract: SUMMARY

Supplementation of L- carnitine has a positive effect on improving the general energy and feed metabolism. Thus influencing the reproductive processes in male animals, L- carni¬tine was supplemented for 8 weeks in daily doses.
A group of 10 rams was used in this study. This group was used as a control group for 8 weeks, then L - carnitine was added to the ration daily for 8 weeks. Semen and serum sam¬ples were collected from all rams during control and experimental periods for assessment of semen quality and testosterone concentration. Cooling and freezing of extended semen were done using IVM system. Percentage of motility after dilution, post thawing and acrosomal integrity as well as viability index of post thawing samples and at 5°C for 72 hours were subjectly assessed. Improvement in the values of studied semen
parameters was observed in all treated rams.
L.H and testosterone concentration showed a significnt ( P < 0.05 )increase in rams after L- carnitine supplementation. Also a significnt ( P < 0.05 improvement in semen quality (sperm motility, alive spermatozoa, sperm cell concentration and sperm abnormalities) in the treated rams.
L-carnitine as a co- factor catalyses the transport of activated fatty acids through the mitochondrial membrane. So the L - carnitine serves as a physiologically vital energy sub¬strate, supporting the synthesis and transport of ATP.
