Ultrasonography; As A Reliable Method for Sex Determination in Tilapia Nilotica Oreochramis Niloticus))

Abstract: Abstract:

Real-time ultrasound scanning of 52 live Tilapia nilotica fish of both sexes was carried out by using 7.5 MHz linear array transducer for sex determination. Mature male gonads were visible as thin finely textured tubular lines inside the body cavity. Mature female gonads (ovaries) were visible at the same site of testes. Ovaries were larger in size with coarse granular appearance and hypoechogenic echotexturc.
Accuracy of ultrasound imaging compared with anatomical finding was 76.9% for sexing out of 52 fishes; 85.7% females and 75.7% males. The study revealed that, the accuracy of visual inspection for fish sexing was 57.7 % out of 52 fishes; 78.6 % for females and 50 % for males.
