Study on Rift valley fever virus in Pigs

Abstract: Five pigs anf five sheep were used in this study to know the role of pigs in transmission of Rift valley fever virus to other animals.
The infected pigs show slight increase in temprature. also the contact sheep show slight elevation of temprature may be due to the transmission of RVF virus from experimentally infected pigs.
RVF virus was isolated from sera, nasal ocular and rectal swabs from both pigs and contact sheep.
Specific antibodies against RVF virus were detected using SNT and ELISA, the serological tests revealed that the level of specific RVF antibody was much lower in pigs than sheep.
From these results, it is cocluded that pigs may act as a reservoir host for RVF virus and play a role in transmission of the disease.
