The impact of live animal importation on the epizootiology of Foot and Mouth Disease in Egypt

Abstract: In January 2006, clinical signs of foot and mouth disease (FMD) were observed among bulls imported from Ethiopia into in a quarntine station at Ismalia governorate. the previous exposure of imported bull to FMD virus in the country of origin has been confirmed by isollation of sertype A of FMD virus from tongue and foot epithrlium of clinically infected bull. FMD-WRL reported that the recovered type A/EGY/1/2006 virus was antigenically related to serotype A FMD virus isolated from Etiopia, Kenya, Yemen and Saudi Arabia. The recovered type A FMD virus was re-isolated from local indigenous cattle, buffaloes and dairy animals, fattening bull, and backyard allover 10 governorates in upper and lower Egypt. 100% morbidity, 80% mortality in the newly born calves and 50% losses in milk were recorded in the affected dairy farms. also 50% losses were estimated in meat production of fattening bulls. In April 2006, serotype O also recovered from bulls imported from Ethiopia into in a meatland quarantine station at Ismalia governorate. The significance of the obtained results particularly concerning the possibilty of importing animals which might act as potentially source of exotic serotype of FMD virus was discussed. recommendations are made to reduce the risks of introducing exotic FMD virus strains to Egypt through live animal importation.
