Trials for the preparation of a lyophilized formalin inactivated foot and mouth disease vaccine and its application in guinea pigs in comparison with the liquid vaccine

Abstract: A lyophilized formalin- inactivated foot and mouth disease virus (FMOV) vaccine was prepared by the propagation of the virus on monolayer of BHK cells. Its titre was 109 TCID50/ml. and 0.5% gelatin has been chosen as a stabilizer for the freeze dried vaccine.
Potency test in guinea pigs showed protection percentage of 100, 100, 50 and zero when using the liquid vaccine, undiluted to
¼, 1/16 and 1/64 respectively, while the percentages were 100, 88.89, 71.43, 33.34 and when using the dried vaccine undiluted, diluted to 1/4 , to 1/16, to 1/64 and to 1/256 respectively.
