Trials for isolation and identification of equine herpes viral abortion in Egypt.

Abstract: Recurrent abortion in the late stage of pregnancy in mares together with respiratory manifestations in young was the most problem in different breeding farms of horses. Samples collected at post mortem and trials for viral isolation were done.
Equine herpes virus (EHV) was isolated from the nasopharyngeal, trachea, lungs and liver as aborted fetus. The isolation was done in embryonated chicken egg (ECE) and baby hamster kidney cells ( BHK21).
Identification of the isolated virus was studied histopathologically by electron microscopically (E/M). A typical characteristic intranuclear inclusion bodies were detected in the tissues of lung, liver and trachea. Electron microscope revealed that envelopment occurs in the nucleus and cytoplasm, however building of the virus on the cell surface could be confirmed. Typing of the isolated strain revealed that it is EHV1 and this is the first record of equine herpes virus existence in Egypt.
