Comparative characterization of lumpy skin disease and goat pox viral proteins

Abstract: The differentiation between the viruses of Capripox group {sheep pox (SP), goat pox (GP) and lumpy skin disease (LSD)} can not be applied by the routine laboratory techniques. This study was carried out for the characterization of lumpy skin disease and goat pox viral protein using ELISA and western blotting analysis of the fractionated proteins by SDS – PAGE. The results of ELISA technique could not differentiate between LSD and GP viral proteins. SDS- PAGE analysis revealed that both viruses have common 6 bands (1.3, 4.6 and 11) while bands (2, 5 , 9 and 10) were not detected in the SDS – PAGE of LSD virus. Western blotting analysis revealed that 4 out of 10 viral associated proteins of GP and 3 out of 7 of LSD associated proteins were similar in their antigenic nature. The recent methods of molecular biology proved that there are common shared antigens between the two viruses which allowed the use of goat pox vaccine against LSD in the field.
