The role of equine herpsvirus-1 antisera in preventing abortion in laboratory animals as a model

Abstract: The study was designed to detect the efficacy of passive protection using immune serum against local strain of EHV-1 to prevent abortion in susceptible mares, so the laboratory animals (mice, rabbits) were used as a model, preparation of the immune sera was done using different types of viral antigens. Experimentally, it was clear that inactivated ( at 56 oC) egg propagated viral antigen was better than tissue culture antigen. Also, transfer of 0.2 and 0.3 ml polyclonal hyperimmune serum protected 75% and 100% of inoculated mice respectively after challenge. While, 1 ml was protect inoculated rabbits (100%). In conclusion, transfer of immune against EHV-1 succeed to prevent abortion in laboratory animals at last third of pregnancy. This is a step to be tested in mares.
