Preliminary attempts to prepare inactivated Babesia equi vaccine

Abstract: This study aimed to prepare and evaluate the efficacy of Babesia equi inactivated vaccine for prophylaxis against equi-babesiosis in Egypt. The lysate vaccine was prepared from infected erythrocytes, collected during the peak of parasitaemia. Three groups of equine were vaccinated with the different formulating vaccines (The first group received lysate vaccine alone, the second group inoculated with lysate vaccine formulated with Daeadextran adjuvant, a fourth group was kept as non vaccinated controls). The efficacy was evaluated in equines by the immunoflorescent assay (IFA) and enzymes linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) techniques. All the animals were challenged with virulent homologous B.equi strain 56 days post vaccination. The vaccinated horses were protected comparing with the non-vaccinated controls which showed typical signs of equine-babesiosis (body temperature raised to 39.9 oC and parasitaemia 7.5%). However, the B.equi lysate vaccine along with Daea-dextran, adjuvant was the best to elicit a strong immune response against B.equi in experimental horses.
