Protective Immunity induced by outer membrane protein and/or lipopolysaccharides against snuffles in rabbits.

Abstract: A purified lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and outer membrane protein (OMP) antigens were extracted from P.multocida serotype 5:A Aluminum hydroxide gel was added by ratio 20% as an adjuvant to the prepared OMP; LPS and the formalin inactivated P.multocida vaccine. A groups of 50 rabbits was randomly divided into 5 equal groups, the first one was vaccinated with OMP; the second one was vaccinated with both OMP and LPS; the third vaccinated with LPS and bovine serum albumin (BSA) vaccine and the forth group was kept as untreated control. Serum samples were collected at weekly intervals after primary vaccination and were subjected to both IHA and ELISA tests. Higher antibody titers were observed 2-4 weeks after vaccination in all treated groups. Challenge test results showed that rabbits could be protected in groups I,II and IV by 70%,90% and 80%, respectively. Whearas the third group showed only 20% protection. Immune sera of rabbits vaccinated with OMP alone or OMP and LPS and formalized vaccine have been found to be effective in reducing mortalities caused by homologous challenge in mice using mouse protection test.
