Recent isolation and identification of equine influenza (EI)in Egypt, 2008

Abstract: During June and July (2008), severe respiratory manifestation among equine population in different governorates were observed after the equestrain events (competitive issues).
through the present study, a local strain of equine influenza (EI) virus was isolated and identitifed. Twenty six (26) naso-mucosal swabs were taken from diseased horses in Egypt(Cairo, Alexandria). Attempts for isolation of the causative agent were performed in SPF embryonated chicken eggs (ECE).
THE HA titres of isolated virus had a titre ranged between 128-256 HA unit in the 2nd egg passage. The serological identitfication of the isolated viral agents using HI test against standard antisera to A/equi-1/praque/56 (H7N7) and A/equi-2/Miami/63 (H3N8) confirmed that all the isolates were belonged to A/equi-2. The isolate was designed as A/equi-2/Alex-1/08.
the serological study of HI antibodies in horse serum samples collected from differnt Egyptian governorates revealed that 100% of these samples were positive.
Direct FA test which applied on random samples of nasomucosal swab using specific standard antisera revealed the positivity of these samples to EI virus.
