Serological investigation of FMD on sera collected during 2005 from cattle sheep and goats in Siewa Oasis, Egypt

Abstract: This study was planned to follow up the epizootiological situation of FMD in Seiwa oasis. A total of 518 serum samples were collected from cattle (168), sheep (200) and goats (150) of different age and sex. All animals were not vaccinated against FMD in this area and serum samples were tested using serum neutralization test (SNT) and sandwich ELISA techniques. Identification of the disease free and carrier animals was performed by 3 ABC commercial kits for detecting non structural proteins showing that the susceptibility rates were 96, 94 and 96.7% as detected by SNT and 94.6, 94 and 96% as detected by ELISA among cattle, sheep and goat respectively. While the probability of natural infection was 0, 91.6 and 100% in cattle, sheep and goat respectively.
