Microorganisms recovered from placenta and aborted foeti of cows and buffaloes in Egypt

Abstract: Bacteriological examination of “160” retained placenta and 91 aborted foeti collected from cattle and buffaloes and examined within 3-5 hours from the time of collection show that miscellaneous bacteria are involved. The most important sites of isolation were necrotic cotyledons and stomach contents of aborted foeti followed by liver, spleen and brain. Generally, E. Coli Citrobacter freundii, C. pyogenes, Str. Pyogenes, Br. Abortus (biovar-7) and L. monocytogenes were recovered from retained placenta. On the other hand, Br. Abortus (biovar 7 and 3,) Haemophilus somnus. Salmonella abortus bovis, Capmylobacter fetus subsp. Venerealis and L. monocytogenes were the important orgainisms frequently isolated from aborted foeti.
