Studies on rinderpeste vaccine in small ruminants

Abstract: On experimenting vaccination of 5 susceptible animals of each of sheep and goat with 102 TCID50 of cell culture rinderpest virus vaccine (=1/10 of the field dose for cattle) ; neutralizing antibody response to rinderpeste virus was serologically detected and was estimated to be ranging between a titre of 16& 32 in either sheep or goat 35 DPI. When a dose of 105 TCID50 (100 times field dose for cattle) of cell culture rinderpest vaccine was utilized in similar experiment ; corresponding serum titres were found to be the same as those found in the first experiment .Thus, efficacy and safety of rinderpest vaccine could be proved in local breed & goat. Serium rinderpeste antibody titres could neutralize either rinderpeste virus or PPR virus. In a third experiment neutralizing antibody titres could be serologically detected throughout a testing period of 49 weeks post vaccination of seven animals of each of sheep and goat using a dose of 103 TCID50 of rinderpest vaccine. Such serum titres are known to be protective as far as rinderpeste or PPR are concerened . It is concluded that rinderpeste vaccine could be used efficiently and safely for local breed sheep or goat at emergency to control rinderpest or peste des petits ruminants.
