Behaviour of rinderpest and rift valley fever viruses in vero cells

Abstract: Tissue culture passage strainsof Rinderpest (RP) and Rift Valley Fever (RVF) viruses were used in this study. The alternative inoculation of the two viruses viruses in VERO cells gave quite interesting results. The inoculation of RVFV before or even after RPV with one hour and the simultaneous inoculation of both of them consistenly led to appearance of the cytopathic effect (CPE) of RVF only with virus titres of 4,3,6 and 2 log10/ml respectively without evidence to RPV. In the second passage of the simultaneous inoculated cultures, a characteristic CPE for both viruses were recognized with virus titres of 2.0 and 4.6 log10/ml for RPV and RVF respectively. On the other hand, the inoculation of RPV proire to RVFV with 24 and 48 hours demonstrated that RP, CPE was present in both cases with a constant titre of 3.0 log10/ml. While RVF-CPE showed up only in the first condition with a titre of 2 log10/ml. The second passage of the 48th hour inoculated RPV before RVFV gave no change in RPV titre. However, RVF-CPE appeared with a virus titre of 2.3 log10/ml. The results of the indirect immunoflurescence (IF) using the same culture samples were identical to those of virus titration.
