Effect of FMD and BCG Vaccines on the blood picture of Calves challenged with FMD virus

Abstract: Fifteen male calves of mixed breed (Friesian x local breed) were divided into 5 equal groups vaccinated with FMD “O” vaccine alone, freeze-dried BCG vaccine alone, simultaneously with BCG and FMD vaccines, BCG then FMD vaccines with 6 weeks apart respectively and the last group was non-vaccinated and left as a control. Twenty-one day after vaccination. All vaccinated and non-vaccinated calves were challenged intradermolingually with 10 MLD 50 of FMD virus (strain 0/2/72-Egypt). The blood picture of all calves was studied before and after vaccination as well as after experimental infection with FMDV up to 12 weeks. The results revealed a significant increase of erythrocytes of the vaccinated animals only. Moreover, monocytosis was found for 1-2 weeks post vaccination and extended in the convalescent animals (calves inoculated with BCG alone and the control calves) up to 8 and 12 weeks of infection respectively.
