Pathological and virological studies on calf mortality : A-Mortalities associated with some respiratory viral infections

Abstract: A total of 509 calves out of 1130 showed evidence of respiratory illness either alone or mixed with diarrhea which was then designated as pneumoenteritis. 40 calves died spontanaeously ; 9 calves were born dead or died within the first 24 hours of their lives (discussed in details elsewhere later), and 31 calves died after progressive pneumonia irrespective of rigorous antibiotic treatment. All calves were subjected for thorough post mortem and immunofluorescent antibody examinations. Bacteriological results are discussed elsewhere later.
In pneumonic calves Parainfluenza-3, Infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, Bovine corona, Bovine respiratory syncytial virus, and Bovine virus diarrhea viral antigens were detected in 11/31 (35.4%), 10/31(32,26%), 4/31(12.9%), 3/31 (9.68%) and 1/31 (3.22%) respectively. Multiple viral infections (more than one virus) were detected in 2/31 (6.45).
The most remarkable gross finding in most of the cases was pneumonia (of different grades) which could be categorized microscopically as “a typical interstitial pneumonia” evident with mixture of proliferative changes involving both the alveolar lining and interstitial tissue.
