Pathological and virological studies on calf mortality : B-Mortalities associated with bovine virus diarrhea virus (BVDV) infection
Abstract: A total of 1130 calves from 5 different farms in Delta and Northern coast were included in this study. 40 calves died spontaneously and their mortalities had been classified as perinatal mortalities(9 calves) and older calf mortalities (31 calves) discussed elsewhere later.
Nine calves (still births and neonatal deaths within the first 24 hours of their lives) have been subjected for thorough post mortem and fluorescent antibody examinations for description of pathological alterations and detection of the corresponding causative viral agents (s).
BVDV was detected in 8/9 (88.9%) of those perinatal mortalities (mortinatalities).
The most striking pathological alterations in BVDV infections were the consistent involvement of a wide variety of tissues by hemorrhages grossly and vasculitis microscopically. It is noteworthy to mention that one of the still born calves had congenital cerebellar hypoplasia and hydrocephalous
