The Role of some free-flying birds in the transmission and spread of Newcastle disease in Egypt

Abstract: 1- Fascal swabs were taken from 140 Egyptian doves hunted from different rural localities in kalioubia governorate.
2- 15 NDV strains were isolated from the hunted doves. The percentage of virus isolation was 10.7%.
3- Assessment of virulence of the isolates my mean death time of minimal lethal dose in chick embryos (MDT) ranged from 33.6 – 72 hours and proved that all tested strains of velogenic nature.
4- Determination of viscerotropic nature of the isolated strains by cloacal infection of two month susceptible chickens gave evidence that all the isolates were of velogenic viscerotropic NDV (VVNDN).
5- Determination of the intracerebral pathogenicity index (ICPI) in a day-old chicks revealed that all the isolates were of velogenic type. The (ICPI) ranged from 1.4-1.9 index.
6- The susceptibility of the Egyptian doves (Streptopelia senegalensis aegyptiacus) to VVNDV by different routes of experimental infection revealed that :
a- I/C inoculated doves had an incubation period (IP) of 2-3 days and showed mostly nervous symptoms and died 1-2 days after symptoms.
b- I/M inoculated doves had an IP of 2-3 days and manifested nervous symptoms and succumbed to infection 1-2 days after symptoms.
c- 1/0 inoculated doves showed nervous and occular symptoms. The IP was 10-12 days and died 1-8 days after symptoms.
d- I/N inoculated doves whoed nervous symptoms 9 days post inoculation. An inoculated dove remained unaffected and shed the virus for about 27 days.
e- Oral infection of doves developed nervous symptoms 9 days post inoculation.
f- All contact doves for each inoculated route did not contract the disease
7- Alternative cohabitation of infected doves with healthy susceptible chickens or vice versa revealed that contact in both cases is present.
8- It was proved that there is no relation between the severity of symptoms of the disease and the doses of the virus used.
