Antioxidant activities of thyme oils extracted from organic and chemical treated plants and their influence on sunflower oil oxidation

Abstract: The essential oil of thyme (Thymis vulgaris L.) is an aromatic member of the Lamiaceae family. Antioxidant and radical-scavenging properties of thyme oils extracted from organic and chemical treated plants were tested by 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay. Results revealed that thyme oil extracted from organic treated plants a major effectiveness compared with thyme oil extracted from chemical treated plants. Efficient of thyme oils extracted from organic and chemical treated plants in stabilizing sunflower oil during accelerated storage have been studied. Thyme oils extracted from organic and chemical treated plants were prepared in different concentrations, peroxide value (PV), antioxidant effectiveness (AE), conjugated dienes (CD) and thiobarbituric acid number (TBA) were taken as parameters for evaluation of antioxidants effectiveness of thyme oils extracted from organic and chemical treated plants in stabilization of sunflower oil. Results from different parameters were in agreement with each other, suggesting the highest efficiency of SO+BHT 200 ppm, followed by SO+1000 ppm Treatment 1, SO+1200 ppm Treatment 2, SO+600 ppm Treatment 1, SO+600 ppm Treatment 2, SO+200 ppm Treatment 1, SO+200 ppm Treatment 2 and Ctrl. Results revealed that thyme oil extracted from organic treated plants has a potent antioxidant for stabilization of sunflower oil.
