STUDIES ON THE UTILIZATION OF NATURAL CAROTENOIDS FROM PERSIMMON FRUITS ( Variety Costata )

Abstract: This study was performed to extract, identify and determine the neutral crude yellow extract pigments separated from persimmon fruits (natural Costata variety). The study also aims to investigate the possibility of utilization of those aforementioned separated natural yellow extract as oil antioxidant. The obtained results reveal that the separated natural yellow pigment extracted from persimmon fruits ( Costata variety ) were carotenoids. It was also revealed that separated carotenoids consisted of seven components ( after fractionation ) by thin layer chromatography ( T.L.C ) technique. Those components are lycopene, monoepoxide lycoprene, ? carotene, ? carotene, antherxanthin, luteun and echineone.
Through the obtained data, it was also realized that the total carotenoids content was 918.782 mg / 100 g persimmon fruits ( on dry weight basis ). The study also ascertained that it is possible and applicable to utilize the separated natural crude pigments as cotton seed oil antioxidant especially when high concentrations from (0.3 and 0.4 %) were utilized.
