Biochemical Studies on Gamma Irradiated Male Rats Fed on Whey Protein Concentrate

Abstract: This investigation was carried out to investigate the possible role of whey protein concentrate in ameliorating some biochemical injuries happened in gamma irradiated male rats. The substitution of 15% of casein protein with 15% whey protein concentrate in the diet was tried to achieve such role. Forty eight male albino rats were divided into four groups (twelve animals per each group): group 1, rats served as a control which were fed on the basal diet through the experimental period. Group 2, rats were fed on a diet contained 15% whey protein concentrate instead of casein protein. Group 3 rats were exposed to whole body gamma radiation with single dose levels of 5 Gy and fed on the basal diet. Group 4 rats exposed to whole body irradiation with single dose level of 5 Gy then fed on a diet contain 15% whey protein concentrate instead of casein protein through the experimental period( two and four weeks post irradiation). Exposure to whole body irradiation caused a significant elevation in serum ALT and AST activities, glucose, urea, creatinine level and total triiodothyronine .While a significant decrease was detected in total protein, albumin and total thyroxin. A significant improvement of such biochemical parameters could be detected in irradiated rats as a result of feeding on whey protein concentrate diet . It could be concluded that whey protein concentrate may be considered as a useful protein source for reducing radiation injury via specific metabolic pathways.
