ECONOMICS OF GRAIN STORAGE IN EGYPT

Abstract: Cereals in general and wheat and maize in particular are considered as major sources of human supply of calories. Due to the relative importance of wheat and maize, the study sheds light on some aspects and economic indicators of each of them. The study also focused on wheat storage for its strategic importance in the long run.
The wheat crop is considered one of the main grain crops and the most important strategic crops that attract the attention of economic policy makers, where domestic production is not sufficient for population needs, leading to imports to fill the deficit and increase the burden of the import bill, especially with the liberalization of the exchange rate and the continuous rise in global prices . The production and storage of wheat is one of the most important issues facing Egypt at present and in the future. In addition, wheat exporting countries use the food force in political pressure on importing countries.
The problem of the study lies in the increase in the amount of grain losses in the different stages, starting with crop cultivation, transport, storage and consumption in general, and the increase in the amount of losses in the storage stage in particular. With higher rates of increase in production, leading to increasing food gap and low self-sufficiency ratio and increasing the percentage of wheat losses, leading to an increase in wheat imports which affect the Egyptian agricultural trade balance in view of the rise in the dollar price against the egyptian pound.
The study aims at shedding light on the capacities and storage capacities of cereals in general and wheat in particular, which helps to set economic agricultural policies aimed at increasing the stored quantities of wheat and reducing the deficit in the storage capacity of wheat as well as limiting the main determinants of wheat production and storage in Egypt Proposed to set mechanism for promoting the production and storage of wheat and design an optimal transport model to ensure the best planning for the storage places of wheat in Egypt.
