Bioactive compounds and their biological activities of some plant extracts By

Abstract: ABESTRACT
A great global interest in medicinal plants and natural products due to their pharmaceutical, cosmetic and nutritional applications. They are considered a big store of many types of biologically active compounds as polyphenols, flavonoids, glycosides, tannins and terpenoids which play an important role in enhancing, maintaining and protecting human health. So, moringa (Moringa oleifera Lam) and fig (Ficus carica) leaves and red pepper (Capsicum annuum) fruits and seeds were selected to evaluate biologically active compounds and antioxidant activity of raw materials and their aqueous and ethanolic extracts. As well as, the effects of selected plant extracts as antioxidant, antimicrobial, anticancer and hepatoprotective agents were also evaluated and the results reported that, moringa and fig leaves recorded the highest contents of bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity comparing with red pepper fruits and seeds. The ABTS and DPPH procedures gave the highest antioxidant capacity values whereas, the lowest values of antioxidant activity were recorded when the Frap procedure was used. All plant ethanolic extracts had the highest phenolic and flavonoids compounds content comparing with aqueous extracts whereas, moringa and fig leaves ethanolic extracts had the highest bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity.
All plant ethanolic extracts at the lowest level (100ppm) had highly antioxidant activity and improved the oxidative stability of sunflower oil more than those of BHT (200 ppm) and considered as good sources of natural antioxidants. Moringa and fig leaves ethanolic extracts were more effective against all tested -foodborne pathogenic bacteria than the aqueous extracts as well as, they have strong antifungal activity and highly effective as antimycotoxic agents more than red pepper fruits and seeds ethanolic extracts and can be used as a safe antimicrobial agents and prevent spoilage of food products.
Fig and moringa leaves ethanolic extract are potentially to be developed as co-chemotherapeutic agents for cervical cancer which had more potent antiproliferative effects and higher cytotoxicity than red pepper ethanolic extract. Furthermore, the ethanolic plants extracts of administered prophylactically, exhibited significant protection against liver injury as evidenced by remarkable amelioration in all investigated parameters of serum and liver. The ethanolic plant extracts may be responsible for the protective effect on CCl4 induced liver damage in rats.
