Food Consumption Behavior among Some Egyptian University Students

Abstract:
This study was carried out on a sample of Egyptian university students in 2 locations (i.e. Cairo, and Beni Swief university) to investigate their behavior towards consumption of food, also this study aimed to investigate some factors related to food intake and some healthy habits that may effect some anthropometrical measurements of the students under study.
This will help the decision maker to plan a food policy to ensure correct dietary consumption pattern of this target group.
As for the sample under the study, 56.93% of the students are of Cairo university and 43.07% of them are of Beni Swief university. According to gender 57.12% of the students are males and 42.88% are females. In regard to age, 7.02% of the total number of the sample are under 18 years old, 91.5% of them lie between 18-25 years old and 1.09% of them are more than 25 years old.
Results showed that, 60% and 68% of the students of both Cairo and Beni Swief university take their breakfast at home respectively, while those who used to take breakfast meal regularly represent 71% of the sample under study
Results showed that, (76%) of the students used to take dinner meal while those who take fast foods represent about (33%) of the sample. As for animal protein there was an increase in the percent of students who take meat, fish and poultry ( more than 2 times/week) in case of Cairo university (63.3%) in compare to Beni Swief university (44.6%) while there was an increase in the percent of those who take milk and milk products ( more than 2 times/week) in case of students of Beni Swief university (57.5%) in compare to those Cairo university (54.5%). As for starchy foods, results indicate a slight increase in those who take rice (more than 2 times/week) in case of Cairo university students (59%) in compare to Beni Swief university students (58%), meanwhile there was an increase in frequency percent of macaroni and Balady bread intake in case of to Beni Swief university students (10%, 29.6% respectively) in compare to Cairo university students (7.1%, 9.1% respectively). As for fruit and green salad which considered an important source of vitamins and minerals, results show an increase in percent of those who take green salad incase of Beni Swief university students (63%) in compare to Cairo university students while there was an increase in percent of those who take fruits in case of Cairo university students (56.2%) in compare to Beni Swief university students (53.4%). Also, results showed an increase in animal protein intake in case of male students (57%) in compare to female students (53%), meanwhile there was an increase in starchy food intake in case of female students.

In regard to anthropometrical status, results showed an increase in percent of obese students of Cairo university (32.4%) in compare to those of Beni Swief university (2.2%) also this percent show an increase incase of female students (27.2%) in compare to male students (10.14%). Also results showed an increase in the percent of overweight students in case of Cairo university (34.28%) in compare to Beni Swief university students (17.75%). In respect to some factor under study which affect tendency to overweight and obese between students of Cairo university and female students in general, results indicate an increase in percent of frequency intake of desserts, snacks, fast food, soft drinks, sleeping directly after eating while the heredity factor came in the last rank of these factors.
So this study recommend conducting more nutritional studies in this field as well as designing nutritional education and health programs for such target group.
