Nutrient Intake and Obesity in Mothers in Rural and Urban Areas of Egypt

Abstract: This study is apart of the national survey of food consumption monitoring system for Egypt. A stratified multistage, random sampling design used to select 3970 families, in Giza, Sharkia, Domiat, Bihira and Bani-Suif governorates in both urban and rural areas distributed according to the relative importance. A single quantitative recall of all food consumed during the previous 24-hr for mothers were studied.
Results showed no problem in energy and protein intake for mothers in urban and rural areas meanwhile there was a deficiency in micronutrients intake in both urban and rural areas, and this deficiency increase in vitamin A, vitamin B12 and calcium intake in urban areas.
Results showed a decrease in RDA of vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin B12 and calcium in rural areas in compare to urban areas. There was an increase in the number of urban mothers which take more than 100% of the RDA vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, calcium and zinc in compare to rural mothers, meanwhile there was an increase in those who have more than 100% of RDA of iron intake of rural areas. Results of analysis of variance show that the highest daily intake of protein, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, zinc and calcium was shown in urban areas. These results were significant at 0.05% level.
The highest daily intake of protein, iron, zinc, calcium and vitamin B6 was shown for mothers of Domiat governorate while the highest dietary intake of vitamin A and vitamin B12 was shown in Giza governorate, and the highest intake of energy and vitamin C was in Domiat and Giza governorates. And this results was significant at 0.05% level.
Results showed that 43% of the mothers were obese and this percent increase in Domiat governorate also obesity increases in case of urban area.
