Effect of some vegetable extracts on induced gastric ulcer in rats

Abstract: The aqueous extracts of lettuce leaves, peeled cucumber and okra pods as well as mixture of them were evaluated for their activities against ethanol/HCl-induced gastric ulcer in albino rats. Thirty five male albino rats average weight 360±20 g were divided into seven groups. Rats in group I were fed on basil diet as a normal control, while the other six groups were received 1 ml ethanol/HCl mixture to induce gastric ulcer and oral administration lettuce, cucumber , okra and their mixture extracts, respectively at a dose of 2 ml/rat morning & night before meal against ranitidine as ulcer drug. The obtained results have shown an increase in final body weight and weight gain of the rats orally administrated vegetable extracts, reduction of total area of lesion and accelerated ulcer healing of rats treated with vegetable extracts. Hemoglobin value and red blood cells (RBCs) were increased in rats orally administrated with vegetable extracts or drug than the control. On the other hand orally administrated with vegetable extracts or drug reduced significantly (p<0.05) total cholesterol, LDL, triglycerides. Nevertheless, HDL was increased than the control. Histopathological studies confirmed the results of the in vivo test.
