Beneficial effects of bee-collected pollen as a dietary supplement on promoting elderly rat health.

Abstract: Gross chemical compostion of bee-pollen was determind.the amino acid pattern of bee-pollen indicated that its protein quality was far mor superior that of the protein quality of soybean and cottonseeds.a series of nutritional experiments were conducted to elucidate the difference between elderly and adult rats based on blood constituents.also, the influence of bee-pollen(2%),cholesterol(1%)and both of them added to the basal diet on the blood constituents of elderly rats was evaluated.
The data showed that elderly rats had higher levels of serum total lipids compared with adult rats.in addition, mixing bee-pollen with the basal diet of elderly rats induced a lowering lipid effect and increased high-density lipoteins leve, however,no effect on low-density lipoproteins level and very little increase in aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase and alkaline phosphatase activities.these findings cleary indicate the beneficial effect of pollen grains on blood constituents of elderly rats.histological examination of liver tissue confirmed the data of biochemical determinations.
