EVALUATION OF SOME BREAD WHEAT GENOTYPES USING GENOTYPE BY TRAIT (GT) BIPLOT ANALYSIS

Abstract: The present investigation was conducted at Sakha Agriculture Research Station to assess the genetic behavior of 20 bread wheat genotypes during the two growing seasons of 2014/2015 and 2015/2016. The experimental design used was a randomized complete block design with three replicates. The magnitude of genetic variability was estimated using broad sense heritability (hb2) and genetic advance expressed as % of grand mean (GA). Also, correlation coefficients were computed between grain yield and its related characters as well as cluster analysis was automated to identify the interrelationships among the tested genotypes. The genotype by trait (GT) biplot graph was used to compare genotypes on the basis of multiple traits. Results showed significant differences among wheat genotypes for all studied characters (Earliness, and yield and its components) in 1st and 2nd seasons and across them except spike length. Genotypes, lines no. 2, 11, 6, 15, 12, 8 and Misr2 gave the highest grain yield and could be promoted for advanced yield trials. Moderate estimates of hb2 and GA % were observed in case of grain filling rate, plant height, number of spikes m-2, biological yield, straw yield, harvest index and grain yield indicating that these traits were good heritable and selection of high performing genotypes is possible to improve these characters. There was a highly significant positive correlation between GY and each of number of spikes m-2 and plant height. Negative associations were obtained between 1000 grains weight and each of number of spikes m-2 and number of grains spike-1 reflecting the phenomenon of the compensatory effects among yield components. Results of cluster analysis exhibited a considerable genetic diversity among the tested genotypes and gave a good chance to achieve sufficient scope for genotypic improvement of wheat through the hybridization among genotypes taken from divergent clusters. The obtained results by GT biplot graphs were coincided with those obtained by correlation matrix and cluster analysis indicating that GT biplot graph is considered a successful and effective technique beside or instead of these analyses. Undoubtedly, GT biplot graph is preferred because it easy to interpret and more informative.
