COMBINING ABILITY AND GEN ACTION FOR YIELD AND ITS ATTRIBUTES IN FLAX (linum usitiatisimum L.)

Abstract: Eight lines and two testers were crossed in a line x tester fashion and the ten parents along with the 16 F1 cross combinations were evaluated to estimate the combining ability and gene action of straw, seed yields and its attributes of flax (linum usitiatisimum L.).Significant differences existed among genotypes, parents, crosses and lines for all the characters studied except for mean squares due to parents for number of capsules per plant which indicated the material used possessed considerable variability. The ratio of general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) variances were less than unity indicated the predominance of non - additive gene action for all the characters studied except plant height. The maximum contribution to total variance for straw, seed yields and its attributes were made by female lines therefore utilized these lines in breeding programs improving flax characters. Giza 9, Sakha 3 and Giza 8 exhibited significant GCA effects for most of the characters studied and were found to be the best combiners. Marlin and Sakha 4 were good combiners for plant height and technical length, so this line can be used for improving straw yield/plant characters, Sakha 5 good combiners for increasing seed yield/plant.The cross Sakha 5 X Blineka was a good specific combiner for straw yield/plant, seed yield/plant and number of Capsules. The cross Sakha 4 X Sakha 2 has been identified as the best hybrid for improving seed yield/plant and its related traits in flax. . Highly significant and positive correlation coefficients were obtained between seed yield /plant and each of number of basal branches /plant, number of capsules /plant and straw yield/plant. While it was significant and negative between seed yield /plant and plant height, technical length and 1000-seed weight at the genotypic and phenotypic correlation coefficients
