THE RELATIONSHIPS AMONG SOME YIELD CHARACTERS OF EIGHT LENTIL GENOTYPES

Abstract: Two field experiments were conducted at Gemmeiza Research Station during of 2010/2011 and 2011/2012 seasons to evaluate the performance of eight lentil genotypes for seed yield and related characters. Four statistical procedures i.e. correlation coefficients, path analysis, factor analysis and principal components were applied to determine the main contributing characters in seed yield variation. Genotype Sinai 1 was the earliest one in flowering and maturity and also surpassed the other genotypes in seed yield and all other related traits. Highly significant and positive association were obtained between seed weight/plant and each of number of seeds/plant, number of pods/plant, number of branches/plant and 100-seed weight. The maximum direct effects were recorded for number of seeds/plant, 100-seed weight and number of pods/plant while the great components of the indirect effects for most characters were appeared through number of seeds/plant. Factor analysis classified the six studied characters, as seed yield components, into three main factors explained 86.14% of the total variability in the dependent structure. Factor 1 was responsible for 34.67% of the total variation and included number of pods/plant and number of seeds/plant. Factor 2 included days to flowering, days to maturity and 100-seed weight and contributed 31.67% of the total variation. Number of branches/plant was the only component of the last factor and accounted for 19.8% of the total variation. Graphically, the principal components analysis revealed that numbers of pods/plant and branches/plant were the most traits influenced on seed yield in lentil. It is obvious that the important traits overall the used statistical procedures were the numbers of pods/plant and seeds/plant. Consequently it seems that selection for these two characters could be helpful to improve lentil productivity.
