ESTIMATES OF GENE ACTION FOR YIELD AND ITS COMPONENTS IN BREAD WHEAT (TRITICUM AESTIVUML(

Abstract: Gene action for days to heading , spike length , yield and its components was studied using 7 × 7 diallel crosses excluding reciprocals during 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 growing season at Tag El-Ezz Research station Dakhila Governorate. The studied genotypes were, Masr1 ,Masr2, Sakha 93, Sakha94, Gemmeiza 10, Gemmeiza 9 and Sids 12. Results indicated that mean squares of general combining ability was significant for all the studied characters, and higher in its magnitudes than, specific combining ability. Only wheat cultivar, Gemmeiza 10 proved to be good general combiner for earliness and grain yield /plant. Whears crosses, Masr2× Sakha94, Masr2× Gemmeiza 9 , Gemmeiza 10× Gemmeiza 9 and Gemmeiza 10 × Sids12 could be considered the promising crosses as they exhibited desirable values of specific combining ability for yield and most attributes. The mean square type of gene action obtained by Jones method (1956) indicated that, additive genetic effect (a) was significant for all characters. Whereas, the dominance gene action (b) was significant for spike length, number of grains/spike, spike grain weight. Based on second degree statistic (Hayman, 1954) results revealed that, the dominance genetic variance accounted for the most part of the total variation for heading date, number of spikes/plant, 1000-grain weight and grain yield/plant resulting in (H1/D)0.5 was more than unity. Heritability in narrow sense was moderate( 0.342) for grain yield/plant.
