Synergistic interaction between two Meloidogyne sp . and root –nodule Bacteria on Cowpea

Abstract: The interaction between the root-knot nematodes , Melodogyne incognita and M. javanica and the cowpea root-nodule bacteria was studied on cowpea , Vigna sinensis in a screenhouse pot experiment . Unexpectedly , plants inoculated with rhizobia and nematodes were poorer in growth than those inoculated with nematodes only and dry weight was about 54% that of control plants . Similarly amino nitrogen content was lowest in plants inoculated with both rhizobia and nematodes , the value being 51% that of the control on a per gram dry tissue basis . The total phenolic content per gram dry tissue increased in plants of all treatments over the control plants . The dry weight and amino nitrogen data suggest that the nematode Infection interfered with the normal nitrogen fixing activities of the rhizobia rendering them determintal rather than beneficial .
