A comparative study on chemical weed control and traditional hand weeding in wheat

Abstract: Two field experiments were carried out in 1983-1984 and 1984 – 1985 season at Mallawi, Agricultural Research Station Farm , A . R . C ., Ministry of Agriculture to find out the advantage of using chemical weed control over the traditional method of hand – weeding on yield and yield components of wheat . Bromoxynil ( as Brominal or Brominex ) at l L. / fed. and Bromoxynil ( Brominal ) at C . 75 L. / fed. as a tank mix with either metoxuron at 1.5 kg / fed . or Diclofob methyl at 1.25 L. / fed. , gave the best results for weed control ant yield ( grain and straw ) with – out significant differences from the hand – weeded treatment . Bifenox at 0.6 L . / fed .and methabenzthiazuron at 1.5 kg / fed. were also very effective on weeds and showed good yield ( grain and straw ) equal to that obtained by the hand – weeded treatment . L – flamprop – isopropyl at 1.25 L. / fed . and diclofob – methyl at 1.25 L . / fed . were not effective on the dominant broad – leaved . Weeds , and subsequently gave a significantly lower grain yield than that obtained by the hand – weeded treatment . All chemical treatments except L–flamprop–isopropyl increased the total carbohydrate percentage in wheat grain significantly . Methabenzthiazuron also increased the total protein percentage in wheat grain compared with the hand – weeded treatment .
