Effect of certain herbicides and their seed oil on sesame mixtures

Abstract: The effect of some herbicides ( I . e . alachlor , Linuron , diuron and Prometryne at the rates of 2 L , 1 kg , 0.5 kg and 1kg / fd respectively and the mixtures of alachlor with linuron , diuron or prometryne at the same rates used for controlling weed in sesame on sesame seed oil quality and quantity was studied . Gas liquid chromatographic technique was used to study the effect of the above herbicides on sesame seed oil fatty acids , hydrocarbons and sterols. Oil percentage in all treatments did not vary considerably from hand – hoeing control except in the case of alachlor which decreased oil percentage by about 8%. All treatments except alachlor + linuron mixture casued an increase in the percentage of linoleic acid (C18: 2 ) and the degree of unsaturation but decreased Oleic acid ( C18 : 1 ) percentage compared to control . All treatments decreased the percentage of palmitic acid (C16 :0 ) but increased the percentage of stearic acid (C18:0) .
Total unsaturated fatty acids were increased in all treatments except in the case of the mixtures of alachlor with linuron or prometryne . All treatment except prometryn Increased the percentage of unsaponifiable matter (hydrocarbons and sterols ) . The main hydrocarbons (morethan 5%) found in herbicide treatments differed greatly from control . All herbicides increased the percentages of squalene,
Cholesterol and stigmasterol but decreased compesterol , the ratio between total hydrocarbons and total sterols ( Th / Ts ) was increased in all treatments except alachlor, prometryne and their mixture .
Generally, most herbicides did not affect sesame seed oil percentage , however, total unsaturated fatty acids , degree of unsaturation, free fatty acids, unsaponifiable matter percentage and hydrocarbons where increased by almost 2224 Annals of Agric all treatments . most herbicides increased the percentage of linoleic acid (C18 : 2 ) and free fatty acids which may affect stability and nutritive value of the oil .
