The effect of certain nitro-herbicides on the growth of some soil-inhabiting fungi

Abstract: The effect of 10 ,100 and 1000 ppm of seven different nitro-herbicides, namely DNOC, dinoseb , nitrofen , fluorodifen , trifluralin, nitralin , and “ cobex “ on the growth of Rhizoctonia solani , fusarium oxysporum var . Vasinfectum , Sclerotium bataticola , Aspergillus flauus, and Aspergillus niger was studied .Nitrofen and fluorodifen were in general the most effective herbicides, especially at the lowest concentration used as well as at the higher concentration. Trifluralin and “ cobex” gave only moderate action at the lowest concentration, and a significant inhibition when used in higher concentrations (100-1000 ppm). Dinitrophenols, i.e., DNOC and dinoseb, gave an inhibitory effect only at high concentrations. The weakest inhibition, in general, was observed when nitralin was used . As for the fungi, Rhizoctonia solani seems to be the most affected fungus by the herbicides used. Fusarium oxysporum var. Vasinfectum and Sclerotium bataticola were moderately susceptible to the herbicides tested , while Aspergillus noger and Aspergillus flavus were completely resistant , except in rare cases.
