Further note on the cleavage of aromatic acids by Azotobacter vinelandii

Abstract: In this communication, the results obtained indicate quininoid intermediates are not in the metabolic pathway of the tested compounds by the above organism. If the latter existed, no degradation in the presence of ascorbic acid would have occurred , since, it prevents the accumulation of quinones as they are reduced constantly to their original phenols in the presence of ascorbic acid which is oxidised to dehydro-ascorbic acid (Lavollay et al., Group Symp., Liverpool, 33,19,1963: Taufel, K and Voigt, J., Die Nahrung, 6,80,1963).
