Abstract: Four field experiments in complete randomized block design were carried out at Sids Agricultural Research Station, Bine Souf Governorate in two successive summer season 1999 and 2000. The purpose of study was to evaluate the effect of some new herbicides uses individually or in integration with supplementary hand hoeing on different weed categories as well as on maize growth, chlorophyll pigments, yield and yield components and grain protein content. Main findings indicated that the use of hand hoeing, fluroxypyr (40 g a.i./fed.) and bentazon (240 g a.i./fed.) were very effective against broad leaved weeds accompanied with increasing the crop yield/fed. by 83.3, 64.3, 50% and percent control 98.7, 96.2 and 94.6% in 1999 season and 52.8, 57.1, 51.1% and percent control 98.2, 95.8 and 91.7% as compared to unweeded check in 2000 season. In general Chlorophyll pigments (Chl., a. and Chl., b) or Caretoniodes were not affected by any weed control treatments indicating the safety of these herbicides on the photosynthetic apparatus. On the other hand, ametryn (500 g a.i/fed.) and butralin (1.2 kg a.i/fed.) either used alone or supplementary with one hand hoeing at 30 days from planting increased the crop yield/fed. by 48.9, 41.1, 54.9, 48.9% and the percent control by 93.6, 85.6, 98.3 and 93.1% in 1999 season and 39.7, 45.7, 60.1, 46.3% increase in crop yield/fed. and percent control 66.0, 83.1, 94.5 and 96.5% as compared to unweeded check in 2000 season and can be advised for weed control of annual weeds as alternative for hand hoeing twice without any adverse effect on protein content.
