Effect of weed control and the preceding summer crops on the annual grassy weeds and wheat grain yield.

Abstract: Four field trials were carried out during 1995/96 and 1996/1997 winter season in Sakha Agricultural Research Station to study the effect of preceding summer crops (i.e. rice and cotton) and some weed control treatments on grassy weeds and wheat grain yield. Data revealed that fresh weight of annual grassy weeds (Phalaris spp.) was greatly reduced by 83 and 87% in wheat preceded by cotton compared to that in wheat preceded by rice. Concerning weed control treatments, Arelon 50% at the rate of 1.25 L/fed. when applied alone or combined with hand weeding once and hand weeding twice significantly reduced fresh weight of annual grasses as compared to those of weedy check in wheat either preceded by rice or cotton at both seasons. However, Arelon alone or plus hand weeding surpassed the other weed control treatments, whereas it reduced the fresh weight of the grassy weeds by (87 and 92%), respectively at the first season and (95 and 96%), respectively at the second season. This significant reduction in weed biomass resulted in a significant increase in grain yield of wheat preceded by rice or cotton. Moreover, wheat yielded significantly more when preceded by cotton than when preceded by rice.
