Effect of some weed control treatments against annual weeds in lentil under Upper Egypt and Nile Delta conditions

Abstract: Four field experiments were conducted during 1998/99 and 1999/2000 winter seasons at Sakha and Mallawi Agricultural Research Stations to investigate the effect of some weed control treatments on annual weeds in lentil under Afir sowing method and heavy infestation by canary grass, Phalaris spp or Avena spp. Under the dominance of Phalaris spp. at Kafr EL-Sheikh, data revealed that the combination of Gesagard 80% at 1 kg/fed. and Fusilade super 12.5% at 0.5 or 1.0 L/fed.; the application of Fusilade super followed by hand weeding (once); and hand weeding (twice) gave the best results in controlling annual weeds. Those treatments reduced fresh weight of annual weeds by (83 to 98%) and (86 and 90%) at the two seasons, respectively and increased lentil seed yield by (0.306 to 0.408 t/ha) and (0.338 to 0.479 t/fed.) at both seasons, respectively. Meanwhile, when Avena spp. were the dominant weeds at Mallawi, data indicated that hand weeding (twice) or the combination of Gesagard at 1 kg/fed. and Fusilade super at either 0.5 or 1.0 L /fed. were the most effective treatments against annual weeds. Those treatments reduced fresh weight of annual weeds by (90, 80 and 82%, respectively) at first season and (87, 79 and 81, respectively at second season and improved lentil seed yield by (0.433 to 0.500 t/fed.) at fisrt season and (0.273 to 0.268 t/fed.) at second season.
