Effect of sowing data, broomrape (Orobanche crenata, Forsk) control and releasing Phytomyza orobanchia, Kalt on faba bean (Vicia faba L.) growth and productivity.

Abstract: This study was carried out during 2000 / 2001 and 2001 / 2002 winter seasons at Sakha Agricultural Research station, Kafr El-Shiekh, Egypt to investigate the effect of sowing date, broomrape control treatments and releasing Phytomyza orobanchia on broomrape control and faba bean production. Results revealed that delaying sowing faba bean date up to November 15th significantly decreased number, fresh and dry weight of broomrape spikes per m2. Also, it decreased spike length, number of spike per faba bean plant and number of capsules per spike. In addition, sowing faba bean on November 15th produced the highest dry weight of pods, plant hight, fresh and dry weight of plant and faba bean seed yield. The application of glyphosate at 36 g a.i./fed. (two or three times) or imazethapyer at 30 g a.i./fed (soil incorporation) were the most effective treatments against broomrape and produced the highest faba bean yield. Hand pulling (twice) was effective against broomrape but did not increase faba bean yield as it carried out after broomrape parasitism already happened. Releasing P. orobanchia at 3 flies per spike increased infestation percentage by Phytomyza in broomrape capsules up 71 and 91%, respectively in March and April. Therefore, it reduced broomrape seed weight up to 74 and 77%. This reduction increased when releasing P. orobanchia was combined with glyphosate at 36 g a.i./fed or with hand pulling (once). Releasing Phytomyza with glyphosate achieved the highest increase in faba bean seed yield. This increase in faba bean yield was attributed to the effect of glyphosate only. Obviously, hand weeding or releasing Phytomyza is effective method in reducing broomrape seed bank in soil and could be carried out in integration with late sowing on November 15th and herbicidal application.
