Effect of some tillage systems and weed control treatments on annual weeds and wheat grain yield and its components.

Abstract: During 1999/2000 and 2000/2001 seasons, two field experiments were conducted at Sakha Agricultural Research Station, Kafr El-Sheikh, Egypt, to investigate the effect of some tillage systems and some weed control treatments on annual weeds, wheat growth and grain yield and its components. These experiments were conducted after rice which heavily infested with annual weeds, particularly annual grassy weeds, especially Phalaris spp. A spilt-plot design, with four replications, was used in this study. Tillage systems; i.e., zero tillage, chisel plow and moldboard plow, were allocated to the main plots, while the weed control treatments were distributed in the sub-plots. Data revealed that moldboard plowing surpassed the other studied tillage systems. Where, it significantly increased the number of spikes per m²; 1000-grain weight and wheat grain yield. However, moldboard plowing was effective in reducing weed population, where it significantly decreased number, fresh and dry weights of total annual weeds in the two seasons. All studied weed control treatments were effective against annual weeds, if compared to weedy check (untreated) in both seasons. The application of Arina at 1.35 kg/fed or Sinal at 40 cc/fed. sequenced by Grasp at 1 l/fed., surpassed the other studied weed control treatments and significantly reduced number, fresh weight and dry weights of total annual weeds and increased wheat growth, grain yield and its components. The significant interaction of tillage systems and weed control treatments showed that performing moldboard plowing with the application of Arina or Sinal+Grasp was the most effective treatments in controlling annual weeds and improving wheat productivity.
